“It’s not your salary that makes you rich, it’s your spending habits.”

Hey there, and welcome to Mini Millionaires.

The holidays are upon us, kids are done with school, routines are a little looser than usual, and parents everywhere are wrapping up the year so they can squeeze in some well-earned rest.

We’re doing the same here at Mini Millionaires, but we’ve lined up a few short, super practical editions to help you make the most of holiday time with your mini millionaires.

Decembers are usually filled with treats, outings and excitement, so it’s easy for spending to run away from us. That's why this week, we’re talking about wise holiday spending habits.

How to teach kids wise holiday spending habits

Smart spending is one of the most valuable money skills your child can learn.

Kids often know how to earn money (from chores, and even starting up their own mini businesses), and we know how important it is to save, but spending wisely is where real financial maturity starts.

It’s the place where financial values, spending priorities and self-control show up in the real world.

So helping our mini millionaires to pause, reflect and choose what they want to spend their money on these holidays with care, actually goes a long way in teaching them to move beyond impulse and towards thoughtful decision-making.

So whether they’re waiting 24 hours before buying that awesome new video game, comparing options between a new pair of sneakers, or even deciding what will still feel worth it next week, these small spending habits build the lifelong ability to be smart spenders.

If you’d like a little more, we unpack a mindset to cultivate, a habit to form, and a tip to try in our How to Teach Kids Smart Spending Habits money guide.

Is it worth it?

The holidays are jam-packed with more treats, outings and “Can I get this?” moments than any other time of year (as it should be tbh).

So our Spend Stars chart will actually help your mini millionaire slow down and think about what spending is really worth it.

After each holiday purchase, whether it’s an ice cream at the beach, a toy from a market stall, a takeaway meal, even a small souvenir, let them write it down on our Spend Stars chart, note the cost and give it a rating it from 1 (“I wish I didn’t buy it”) to 5 (“I’ll treasure this forever”).

It turns festive spending into reflection, not regret.
