“A penny saved is a penny earned.”

Benjamin Franklin

Hey there, and welcome to another holiday edition of Mini Millionaires.

The festive season is in full swing, which means family visits, festive treats and of course a special envelope or bank deposit from Granny and Grandpa.

Kids often see holiday money as something to spend immediately, but this is a golden opportunity to help them take a moment and figure out how to best use that gift from Granny Clause and Grandsanta.

In this edition, we show you how to help kids turn holiday gifts into thoughtful goals they’re excited about.

Money Smart

How to teach kids about using Granny’s holiday gift

Believe it or not, but the holidays are a great time to help kids practise planning, especially if they receive money as a gift.

And we know how hard it can be for mini millionaires to resist the temptation to spend a cash gift all at once.

That’s why it’s a golden opportunity to help them plan before they even open their gifts.

Help them to divide Granny’s gift into specific goals: something they can buy now, something to buy later and something they want to save toward.

Planning ahead teaches kids that money can stretch further when it has direction.

We unpack a mindset to cultivate, a habit to form, and a tip to try in our How to teach kids to plan ahead with Granny’s gift money guide.

Did you track it?

When kids can actually see their savings progress, that’s when the motivation hits.

So this week’s free downloadable resource is the Savings Tracker. It turns saving into a fun, visual adventure that keeps motivation high.

Inside, you’ll find:

  • A simple example showing how to break down a goal and track it.

  • A blank English tracker to personalise.

  • A bonus Afrikaans version for our bilingual savers.

Your mini millionaire just writes down their goal, total cost, and colours in the bar as they add in the money they get from Granny, Grandpa, (and any other awesome friends and family).

From sneakers to school trips, this tracker helps kids plan ahead, stay focused, and celebrate each milestone.

It helps them make the most of these great festive money gifts.
